Where Is My Mind? Pixies

Ridiculously brain dead/numb of late with the madness associated with moving o/s, particularly given that the destination hasn’t always been clear - so much so, I almost completely forgot that the Pixies will be at Splendour this weekend.

[MILDLY OFFENSIVE EXPLETIVE] YEAH!!!!

Stephen Fry: In defence of the modern digital world | ABC Radio PM → abc.net.au

literarypiano:

“[Those who scoff at new technology and social media such as Twitter] should bear in mind that in the early 18th century there was the new technology of handpresses, as printing became cheaper and cheaper and cheaper, and it wasn’t the full invention of printing anymore than Twitter is the full invention of the internet; it was a little development within it…that lead to magazines, journalism, political pamphlets. And you know what, oddly enough, the many famous ones had names that were very like ‘Twitter.’ They were called things like ‘The Rambler,’ ‘The Idler,’ ‘The Spectator,’ ‘The Bystander.’ They weren’t called ‘Earnest Debate’ or ‘Serious Penetration of Issues’ or ‘The Philosopher.’ And by such strange and curious byways huge upheavals in the way people relate, and respond to one another, and political ideas and the way they push their ideas forward can be promulgated, and it isn’t anything you can predict, certainly anything you can control.”

 The National - Slow Show

“Matt Berninger: That one’s actually kind of literal, wanting to get out of some anxiety-filled public situation, where there’s a party or something and you just want to escape and be home, close the doors with someone that you really care about and just be stupid and laugh. Forgetting about social pretenses and how you have to act in public, you can just be a fool with this person, you know, ugly and awkward and silly and they won’t judge you.”

Son of a Gun - The Vaselines

You know what I could handle right now in this stinking HK heat?  Karaoke and beers. Who wants to do a karaoke duet of this with me NOW?

Mark & John (Bring On the Glitter Kids) The Secret History

The Secret History - Mark & John (Bring on the Glitter Kids)

A few years ago on one of my then pretty regular trips to NYC, I happened upon one of the first shows (maybe the first?) of this band in Brooklyn. It so happens that the lead vocalist, Lisa Ronson, is the daughter of legend Mick Ronson who as you may know collaborated with Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars, as well as Morrissey amongst others.

Against that background it’s probably not so surprising that there were a bunch of nostalgia-chasing fanboys in the audience who just stood there like statues, blue-balled to the max, with mouths gaping open for the entire duration of the performance. It didn’t hurt that she is gorgeous, stylish and has an awesome set of …erm… vocal cords.

SO, having been up until 3am preparing for movers to arrive today, the line “I need to get some sleep!” is rather relevant to my interests. Ooh and just wait for the unexpected synth-driven breakdown. OH MY.

Listen - you shall be rewarded.

Five THOUSAND!

WOW. Five thousand glimpses into miraged chasms of carefree emptiness that I sometimes wish were my actual mind.  I kid.  Sort of.

So here’s a long overdue thanks to tumblr and its inhabitants for my 5000th post. Sincerely, a heartfelt thanks goes to tumblr and YOU ALL for:

- Providing me with a genuine community of people to learn from and share with in all manner of disparate passions from shoegaze to coriander to feminist theory.

- The tumblr people that I’ve met IRL that I now count as great friends and those that I’d like to have the opportunity to spend more time with because first impressions certainly weren’t disappointing. Here I’d include the Australian crew like Grant, Kate, Simon, Tash, Chrissy, Nat, Josh, Tania, Chrissie, Albert, Nicole and Andrew…. etc. (you know who you are) and team USA like Max, Michael and Will.

- The tumblr people I’ve not met in IRL yet but know that we’d get on just splendidly if we did meet, like Cass, Nathania, Sean,Travis, Tallie, Shannon (next month maybe!), Frank and Danielle.  Just knowing that potential is there is something special in itself, right?

- Connecting me in unexpected ways with people I already know, like Tim, Jeffrey, Amber and Tom, in such a way that we see aspects of each other’s lives which we perhaps don’t always have time to share with each other due to the oceans that separate us.

- Connecting me with great writers/thinkers many of whom do what they do on the side and yet still manage to astound the masses with their engaging styles of communication, even those of the usually TL;DR variety. Yes, I mean you Mills and other tumblr scribes with their own unique styles of delivery and content as you will find here and here for example. I’ve also recently started following Sady’s tumblr which is sharp yet endearing and as such a joy to read.

- Finally and perhaps most importantly to me, connecting me with people for whom music seems as central to their core as it is to mine and who share their thoughts about music from a place that let’s me know how it makes them feel and personally that’s what I want most from a music post or a music review for that matter.  Sure you can be a fount of knowledge either from personal experience or gleaned from poring over records from times you may not have even been born and some of you are adept at that also, but what matters to me most is to get an essence of how it matters to you on a visceral level. In this category I’d put Britt, Andrew, Miles, Ben, Brad and Martin just for starters.

God that all sounds so naff.  Right! Time to get posting something offensive to somebody, somewhere…

Xx

Young Feminists to Old Feminists: If You Can't Find Us, It's Because We're Online → campusprogress.org

sadydoyle:

(via redlightpolitics)

…But the extent to which we confuse Internet Feminism with Feminism, or say that the growth of one ensures the transformative social impact of the other, worries me. I think we pat ourselves way too much on the back for our Internet feminisms, our various righteous comments and blog posts and blog wars, and forget to ask ourselves what impact our statements are having on anyone who doesn’t already read feminist blogs. At our worst, we create ever-narrowing circles of ideological purity, and waste valuable time and energy attacking each other for not being perfectly versed on or in accordance with the current Internet Feminist consensus.

Bye Bye Bye School Of Seven Bells

unicornology:

bye bye bye by school of seven bells

the new album ruuuuuuules! this song in particular reminds me of a triumphant everyone-ends-up-at-prom-dancing-and-fist-pumping-and-drinking-punch feeling that could only be found in the closing scene/end credits of a john hughes film. does that make sense? probably not. play this song over the prom scene from pretty in pink. see what i mean? cool.

I GET IT! You are absolutely right lady.
