I have 2 preposterously large TVs in my house, one left by the landlord. Over the past year and a half, neither gets used except for the occasional DVD or when I bother hooking up my mac to the TV which is rare. We can’t get Hulu in Hong Kong, but I do watch specific TV shows online using other options as and when I please. I only realised what a difference it had made to my life when I had visitors staying with me who are used to having a TV on all the time, almost like a comforting background noise. I found it claustrophobic and very unsettling how the entire focus of the room shifted from people to this inanimate object. Needless to say, I achieved very little over those visits and by that I also mean that I experienced very low levels of meaningful communication with those particular visitors. Further to your point, since switching off, I’ve learned more languages and listened to and played more music and found more time to prepare decent meals. I’ve yet to bake a cake or any other baked goods though. Maybe that’s next up…I cant say enough good things about it. it’s almost as if i have been forced to do new things and more of it. i read now. i write music more. i listen to records all day. i cook more. i clean more…. and all of this i KNOW is a direct reflection of not watching sportscenter 4 times in a row while mindlessly staring at the remote.
What i miss i catch on hulu, and what i want to see live I go to a friends or a bar. i can truly honestly say that life is better without my TV. try it… seriously… unplug your shit, and do something else. get on you tube and learn something. you can friggin learn anything on there. i learned guitar on you tube, im not even kidding. “Jon, I want to learn how to make a cake!” ok then here you go
